Intuition and Discernment Take the Wheel

Recently, I’ve had multiple conversations with people in my life about how we can tell whether a resource is legitimate and helpful in the mist of the vast amount of information that we come across online and products that are constantly being sold to us from all kinds of different sources.
It can be challenging to pick through all the noise leading to overwhelm and opting out altogether. While, it is true that in the vast interweb there are plenty of people and products being pushed in our faces from a predatory and profit centered foundation. It is also true that there are many people using the channels currently available to us to share their gifts and wisdom.
The short answer for how I am able to choose what to invest my time, energy and money in is by using my intuition and discernment.
Our intuition is something that is with us all the time gently nudging us in directions that best suit us even without us trying. There are many different beliefs about where this sense rooted - God, ancestors, Angels, an evolutionary development for survival - however one thing we can all agree on is having experienced a sensation of “I knew it” when something good or not so good happens that we just had a feeling about in the moment leading up to it.
Discernment is a skill that is refined by both experience and intentionality using my intuition. Discernment is bolstered by my intuition. I am able to practice discernment when receiving loads of information. It’s the act of deciding what is for me and what isn’t and moving in the direction of what feels like it’s in my best interest.
An example is coloring my hair yesterday. I had a clear vision for what color I wanted my hair to look like, especially in contrast to, my attire and accessories for my upcoming wedding. When at the salon, there were a lot of different options for me to pick from because the color that I wanted required mixing two different colors. There are a lot of colors available that looked as though they might give me the results I was looking for.
Those who know me know that I have no qualms about coloring my own hair on a whim in my bathroom, but I am definitely no cosmetic chemist. I’ve never mixed colors together before for my hair, and I never even use the brand that the stylist was using on me.
Intuition enters. I noticed myself feeling nudged towards two specific colors. I found myself pointing to these two colors and saying “this feels right.” I did not say it looks right. I did not say it sounds right it just felt right. Even though there was a louder push in my head, a fear that it might come out too dark, my intuition nudged me in the right direction and my ability to practice discernment allowed me to gently turn my attention away from all of the other options and calmly make a choice trusting that it would lead me where I was trying to go.
And it did! We acknowledged we may want to leave the color on a little longer next time to get a slightly more vibrant hue, but I got exactly what I wanted and clear steps for deepening into that goal next month.
This is of course, a slightly lower stakes example of using intuition and discernment…although I’ll say having hair that is not a color you were going for (I know from experience) can really impact a lot of other areas in your life lol
However these foundational ingredients can be applied even with the biggest decisions in life like how to best care for your health or what relationships to invest in.
If you find yourself frequently feeling as though you can’t trust yourself to make good choices. or taking action in ways that lead you to outcomes that are not desirable to you, I have great news.
You, too, have intuition and can develop the skill of discernment. As I said, intuition is always there gently directing you into the path of waste resistance toward your deepest desires, however because that knowing voice is so gentle, it can easily get lost underneath the noise of fears, doubts, and other people’s opinions about what you should or should not be doing.
Finding ways to more deeply tune to your intuition can help you begin to understand what it feels like developing the skill of discernment can help you to drown out the noise around you and within you amplifying the volume of your intuitive compass.
“How, Tati, HOW??” As with any new skill, it’s important to start small. This can look like choosing to go with that gut feeling for smaller decisions, even if it feels a little uncomfortable:
Start with something like which route to take on your GPS - when you have the time and space to not stress about being late.
This can start with something even smaller like choosing to try a new lotion totally based on vibes (sometimes this means just grabbing what feels good or following the sense that gently says “do a quick google search.”
I’ve done this with wines too! Lol, I have prided myself on my ability to consistently select the perfect wine to pair with food totally based on my intuition. Try this with a drink of your choice if you practice sobriety.
Picking lower stakes opportunities in your life is an excellent way to begin building up the muscle of discernment and tapping into what it feels like to choose intuitively rather than out of fear or obligation.
If this was helpful, I would love hear your shares on how you’ve been practicing this in your life! Shoot me an email or share your experience on socials and tag @tatianamichelleee on Instagram.
